Frieze 2023: Golden dinosaur in the room

A baby dinosaur is roaring in the top-end of the art market at Frieze Masters this year. This exceptionally well-preserved skeleton is priced at $20m, making it a most expensive piece of art in the category. “It’s a once in a lifetime discovery,” says Salomon Aaron, the director of London’s David Aaron gallery, which is presenting the skeleton at the fair.

This is the 11th year of Frieze Masters in Regent’s Park,  its collections now stretch in all directions, from the ancient to the modern, and this colossus must be one of the oldest ever. The dinosaur dates back to Cretacious period, around 65 million years ago. Dug up in Montana a few years ago, its skull was 90% complete and body 50% intact. David Aaron gallery provides a bone map that allows collectors to see the percentage completeness of each bone. “In this case it’s just a very complete specimen,” Aaron says, “above and beyond the industry standard”.

Of course, the diversity of artists and galleries represented in Frieze is infinitely richer. This year, as last year, painting again feels especially abundant. Showstopping sculptures and installations are everywhere. One of them called Untitled (cylindrical lens) sculptures is particularly amazing brought by Lawson, a photographic artist and Eversley, a veteran of the Light and Space sculptural movement. The minimal form, spectacular surface and modern material seems to capture light within uncannily.

The Frieze fair and its sibling, Frieze Masters attract over 60,000 people each year, and this year there were more than 200 galleries exhibiting. Frieze Masters, which is located 15 minutes’ walk away in the same Regent’s Park, combines both contemporary and historical art, along with rare objects which this year included a 154-million-year-old Camptosaurus skeleton and a meteorite rock. Sadie Coles HQ, Hauser & Wirth, Pace, Maureen Paley, White Cube were among the major galleries represented in the 2022 edition of Frieze and Frieze Masters.
